Open Gardens Day Sunday 12 June

Well, the weather could have been kinder. But those who did turn out (about half of normal number, including 100 who bought tickets on the day) seemed to enjoy the event as much as ever.  The gardens looked especially lush, and the rain added a sort of camaraderie to it all. At the tea garden in the Dell, Maggie Chambers and her team poured an amazing 350 teas, coffees and cold drinks, and served up some 400 pieces of cake. (Many thanks to all who baked so many delicious treats for the event. Although the refreshments were included in the ticket price, an extra £120 was raised by donations and extra sales.)  Many people took in the view from the top of  St Gabriel's church tower,  kindly opened by vicar Jane Morris; the Tired Legs bus provided some respite from the weather, and  the beautiful plants on offer at Margaret Mann’s in Chatsworth Rd also attracted much attention, with sales on the day totalling almost £840. We’ll have a final total of the amount raised soon.

Many thanks to all those who worked so hard to make the day a success (too many to name here, but you know who you are) and a special thank you to the host gardeners for sharing the results of their hard work with us. There was so much to inspire and to learn from. One visitor said she thought the standard was much higher than even that of some Yellow Book gardens she’d visited elsewhere.

Here’s to OGD 2013!
