Fraudsters spoofing bank telephone numbers

Which magazine reports that It’s easy for scammers to spoof legitimate phone numbers using software shared by criminals freely online. Louise from Hertfordshire believed that her bank account was compromised after receiving a text from what appeared to be the Barclays fraud team. Then, she received a call from a number that matched the Barclays phone number on her debit card and was persuaded to transfer all her funds into a ‘secure account’.  So how can you tell if a call is genuine if you can’t rely on caller ID?
And a MapRA member had similar sophisticated phishing call. The fraudsters masked their telephone number, so it appeared on her mobile as a legitimate Nationwide telephone number. She was also concerned that when she said to the guy that she wouldn’t share any details from her card reader and that she would call the main number herself; he very quickly said that if she did that she would liable for any fraud carried out between the time the call finished and went into a branch. In the current Covid climate people maybe aren’t as comfortable going to the branch and hence they could be swayed to then proceeding with the call and sharing information they shouldn’t. At one point he even put her on hold to ‘talk to his supervisor’. She was quite shaken by how much information he knew about her.

One of our long standing dog owner members on Teignmouth Road is seeking to matchmake a local small or medium size canine playmate with their calm and sweet senior female Jack Russell mixed breed dog, with a view of occasional walks together with both owners, reciprocal play dates and dog minding on a non-commercial basis. If interested, please let me know and I'll forward details to her.
