Scams

  • A member almost got caught out by a WhatsApp scam.  Message claiming to be from friend with a sob story about having to borrow a phone as hers being repaired (to explain the unknown number); And asking for payment of a bill as her bank blocked account for some reason. Pretty convincing until couldn’t provide details that her friend would clearly have known.
  • Fake Evri delivery text scam. Delivery company Evri, formerly Hermes, is being impersonated by fraudsters asking for bank details to pay a fake delivery fee. It asks the recipient to visit a website to pay a £1.45 shipping fee, and if they don’t pay, the parcel will be returned to the sender. It’s likely that the scammers are mass targeting but It can be very persuasive if you are actually waiting for a package to arrive. For screenshots of what the scam text looks like and what to do if you receive one see link

Emergency Coroner service in Brent

A petition has been launched as, surprisingly, these services are not available in the Borough; despite its longstanding Jewish and more recent Muslim communities; to both of whom burial very shortly after death is crucial. The new petition has been originated by the Central Mosque of Brent, in Station Parade, but is being supported by a range of Faith groups. Richard Geldart can supply copies of the petition to anyone interested but a more direct approach for anyone wishing to sign and, preferably, persuade others also to do so, would be to phone the Mosque office on 0208 450 1987 and arrange for petition form to be given to them. Or contact Richard at dickgeldart@gmail.com
