Some 8 of us from MapRA plus several others from around the country heard Yuliya describe via zoom the work her NGO is now doing to help people in Ukraine. (Yulija is a work contact of MapRA member Doug Brodie.) She runs a social enterprise called NGO-Girls which was provides health and hygiene guidance, direction and education for school age girls in Ukraine. The project partners with UNICEF; click on the link to see more.
At this time of war, Yuliya and her team have immediately changed their work and focus. she has found a derelict community farm building that she and her volunteers are converting from scratch into a refuge. As soon as she can provide a bed, there’s a queue of women & children to take it.
As a result of the zoom meeting, people were enthused to help, and Marcus Liberman of St Gabriels church has quickly set up a site to be able to collect any donations to help her work; - it allows:a Gift Aid claim. The link is: gabriels.org/yuliasrefuge Donors will receive a simple email confirmation of their donation.

St Gabriel’s church have been approached by a church contact about 2 young ladies; both called Olga looking for someone to sponsors under the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Maybe there is a member of MapRA who is registered already on the scheme who might be up for sponsoring one of them. If you can I can put you in touch with the contact at the church. They have send brief introductions:
- “Hello, I'm Olga, 32 years old Ukrainian. I have fled Kyiv after the war started. looking for a cat-friendly host in UK. My cat is a house cat and doesn’t need to go out. My English level is ok, the last IELTS score was 7.5. I have worked in Data science, Data Analysis field, currently working in a Data Engineering role. At the moment I'm in Belgium.”
- “Hello! My name’s Olga and I'm 44 years old. I'm forced to look for a safe place for me and my daughter, Katherine, and our dog, Mickey (breed bichon frize) due to the war in my country. In Ukraine, we lived with my daughter and our dog in Bar, Vinnytsia region. We are very friendly and we like going for walks, travelling, doing sports and cooking. In Ukraine, we have a big friendly family. We used to meet and spend weekends together. I worked as the head of an insurance company. I enjoy running, playing table tennis, and reading and I speak very little English. My daughter, Katia, aged 13, is really keen on drawing, studying English, playing tennis and cooking. We need a roof over our heads and we are ready to answer all your questions.“

For those who can't make it, the ceremony will be webcast and people can watch it for 28 days. Let me know and I’ll pass on details from John
